How to use VNR and PPSSPP:

Before proceeding, I really recommend you guys to read the basics on how to use VNR. I won’t be answering questions that are already answered on the basic tutorial.

  1. Run VNR and I recommend to uncheck “Automatically detect running game” in Preferences > Launch. Restart VNR.
  2. Run PPSSPP v0.9.8
  3. Go back to PPSSPP Select game of choice and run till you reach the menu then proceed to enter heroine name till you reach the part where characters are talking.
  4. Go back to VNR, and in the Springboard click the silver rocket icon.  VNR will attach itself to PPSSPP. A blue menu will appear on the left side of the PPSSPP window. We’ll call it side menu.
  5. In the side menu open text settings, Menu > Text settings
  6. Proceed playing the game till VNR will detect text threads and select the correct text thread. (This takes about 20 seconds just continue clicking and a lot of text dialogues will pop up)
    • Don’t mind the text garbage, what matters is what would appear in the subtitle box. If there’s no text garbage in the subtitle box then its okay because the garbage text is already being taken care of.

  7. Click Save.
    • Sometimes you have to do the opposite on some games. Launch  PPSSPP first for some games. You need to experiment.

Notes:

  • Do not run PPSSPP via SpringBoard
  • Changing windows size affects text thread detection. Don’t change window size while playing.
  • Restart PPSSPP when loading another game, then restart VNR as well.
  • All text thread detection are global, whenever you run a game, you must manually adjust the text thread again.
  • Default text encoding on tested compatible games is Shitft-Jis
  • Always exit VNR first before PPSSPP to avoid crashing..haha.
  • Please please please…do not submit psp translation!! It’s pretty alpha, all users will be having the same settings and there’s no ISO detection yet!
  • When downloading PPSSPP, VNR does not attach itself to the x64 application. – Roninmedia

For the latter three games, I couldn’t find any matched text in the memory. I have tried SHIFT-JIS, UTF8, UTF-16, and EUC-JP, but still no-match.
I suspect the games are made in some other seldom used Japanese encodings. –Jichi

Remember, if there’s no text garbage in the subtitle box, then it’s okay. We already added a code to remove most text garbage. It should appear correctly in the subtitle box.
  • Feel free to post at the official VNR forums Sakuradite: on this thread, for engines that  aren’t supported by VNR, remember be very specific with your request. Include game title, problem as well as VNDB link.

  1. Ahaha, thanks for including my findings! I also could make it work for Daiya no Kuni no Alice: Wonderful Wonder World, Shinsouban Heart no Kuni no Alice: Wonderful Wonder World and Heart no Kuni no Alice: Wonderful Twin World, btw. Also Okashi na Shima no Peter Pan and Omochabako no Kuni no Alice require the text encoding to be set to UTF-16.
    I failed with Hanayaka Nari Waga Ichizoku, Hakuouki Zuisouroku, and Moujuutsukai to Oujisama. ;A; Although I’d encourage you to not take my word as final since a couple of times VNR refused to work for no reason whatsoever, and got fixed after I did random things. :/ Even the VNs that normally work refuse to cooperate at times and the porblem isn’t fixed until I reboot my laptop.

    1. Oh, Did you update your VNR today? There was a slight change yesterday.
      Also: to play another VN without restarting laptop, you first have to close VNR and PPSSPP. Start PPSSPP again with the new game then start VNR again.

      1. I also found it sometimes you need to do this order.
        Run VNR
        Run PPSSPP (not via spring board)
        Proceed to text settings
        Select a wrong text thread purposely and save.
        Close text settings
        Open text settings again and continue playing till you get the right one..
        This works for Houkago Colorful*Step

  2. And I also start with the order you recommended. I wonder, am I doing something wrong with VNR? Do I have to go to the preferences screen every time or something? I get auto logged in by just opening the program, right?

    BTW you may add the 3 games I reported to work in the list, I’ll research more on the ones I failed to confirm things.

    I started norn9 and then vnr and made everything according to your tutorial/guide but the texthread just won´t come and it doesn´t detect the text in all text codings, I have no idea how to fix this, do you maybe know how to fix that problem?

    1. Try this:
      Run VNR
      Run PPSSPP to the part where characters are talking. Save STATE 1 in PPSSPP
      Restart VNR by going to the VNR tray icon. Right click >”Restart”.

      After VNR attaches itself to PPSSPP again
      Go to text settings and go back to PPSSPP
      Continue the game while the text setting is open until you find the perfect text thread.
      Save it and restart PPSSPP
      Run Norn9 again and LOAD STATE 1, this will bring you back to the start and everything should work.

        In the sidebar menu >menu >click text setting
        And select the correct dialogue text as dialogue
        Then save

  4. Voca reporting once again! Once I moved to my better laptop and followed your instructions to a T, cycling between games is working better now. Here are my new findings :)

    Are you Alice? doesn’t work, I’ll 100% sure because the only text thread that showed up did so during scene changes, its content didn’t change with dialogue progression >.< Clock Zero Portable and Musketeer -Le sang des chevaliers- don't detect any text threads at all. After Jiichi's update, Utapri repeat works (I noticed that the line breaks added a garbage character in spoken dialogues), but other brocolli games like Utapri Allstar and Kamigami no Asobi still can't find any text threads.

    Romeo vs. Juliet, Hyakki Yakou ~Kaidan Romance~, Amnesia Crowd,Toki no Kizuna, Princess Arthur and Black Wolves Saga -Last Hope- work perfectly~ So does Eikoku Tantei Mysteria, but there's a little extra garbage text after the dialogue, like this

    Once I retested Moujuutsukai to Oujisama in my laptop with better config, I noticed that there were some text threads containing the whole dialogue, but there was too much garbage mixed with it.

    1. Ah, in Moujuutsukai to Oujisama I already removed garbage text, it will appear in text threads but it won’t appear in the game as Jichi and I added the text garbage removal. Go ahead and try setting it as Dialogue :)

  5. Just some additional comments. When you download PPSSPP, it has two executables. Use VNR with the x86, not the x64 application. VNR does not attach itself to the x64 application.

    I have tested VNR with PPSSPP v0.9.9 and got it to work successfully with Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai. You just need to set text encoding to UTF-16.

  6. Hello, sorry to bother but I also tried to play Norn9 with VNR and I did as you instructed but the game still doesn’t show me a text thread. Do I have to select the game window before restarting or something like that?

    1. For Norn9 you have to run VNR first before PPSSPP.
      Then attach VNR when you get to reach the part where characters are talking.

    I was wondering however, does this work with PPSSPP and translation aggregator? Because VNR only gives one translation, and translation aggregator has multiple dictionaries that you can use at the same time. So does VNR act as the “ITH” to hook the text?
    Forgive me if I sound dumb, I’m still rather new to the whole thing ^^; Thank you =)

      1. Those are online translation services. Yes. It uses dictionaries, you can set them up in the preferences. Or you can read the basic tutorial about VNR then proceed to the advance tutorials.

  9. I downloaded Diabolik lovers and everything is fine except that the translation box isn’t appearing. I have the blue side bar and the correct dialogue appears in the text settings. Any idea what I did wrong? Also, does anybody know why the game screen is so small?( it looks like a small rectangle)

    1. It’s small because it’s a PSP game..PSP screens are small. You can force PPSSPP to have a bigger secreen size . Game setting > Window Size but the quality’s gonna be bad. You need an offline translator like ATLAS or LEC to enable offline Japanese translation. I posted them in VNR basic tutorial.

    2. If you’ve installed ATLAS.
      In the side menu preferences > offline translation–
      make sure the checkboxes are checked
      In the side menu preferences > options >machine translation– should have a blue squalre.
